Churly: A Fresh Script Font for Modern Web Design

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store that sells handmade jewelry when I stumbled upon Churly. It’s a script font from Script Amp, and it immediately caught my eye with its soft, flowing curves and elegant feel. I knew right away that it could bring a unique personality to the project.

As a web designer, choosing the right typeface is crucial. It affects everything from readability to brand identity. Churly has this handwritten charm that feels personal yet professional. The letters have subtle variations in stroke weight and slant, which gives them a natural, almost organic look. It’s not too ornate, so it doesn’t distract from the content—it enhances it.

Testing Churly in a Real Project

I first tested Churly in the hero section of the website. The headline read “Handcrafted Jewelry for Every Occasion,” and I wanted something that felt inviting but still trustworthy. Placing Churly over a full-width image of a necklace against a dark background worked beautifully. The contrast between the light font and the dark backdrop made the text pop without overwhelming the visuals.

Next, I tried using it in the navigation bar. At first, it looked a bit too playful for a menu. But after adjusting the letter spacing and reducing the font size, it started to feel more balanced. It added a nice touch of character without making the site feel unprofessional.

One thing I noticed early on was how well Churly performed on mobile screens. Even at smaller sizes, the details remained legible. This is important because a lot of users will be browsing the site on their phones. I also made sure to test it on different background colors and found that it worked best with light or neutral tones. Dark backgrounds can sometimes make script fonts harder to read, but with proper contrast, Churly holds up well.

Where to Use Churly on a Website

Churly isn’t just for headlines. Here are a few places where I’ve used it successfully:

However, I did find that Churly wasn’t ideal for long paragraphs of body copy. It’s better suited for short phrases and headings. That said, pairing it with a clean sans-serif font like Helvetica or Roboto for body text creates a great balance between style and usability.

Readability and Brand Consistency

When it comes to readability, I always consider how the font behaves across different screen sizes and devices. Churly has good legibility even at smaller sizes, which is a big plus. I also checked how it rendered in various browsers and found that it maintained consistency across platforms.

Another consideration was brand consistency. The boutique jewelry store had a warm, artisanal vibe, and Churly fit perfectly into that aesthetic. It helped reinforce the brand’s personality—handmade, thoughtful, and a little whimsical.

For a more professional feel, I paired Churly with a serif font in the footer and sidebar areas. This created a visual hierarchy that guided the user’s eye naturally from the bold headline to the supporting text.

Font Pairing and Practical Tips

Font pairing is one of the most important aspects of typography. Churly works best when paired with a complementary font that provides contrast. I often use it with a modern sans-serif for body text or a classic serif for a more traditional look. The key is to ensure that the two fonts don’t clash but instead work together to enhance the overall design.

When using Churly, I recommend keeping the font weight consistent throughout the site. Too many variations can create visual noise. Also, avoid using it in small buttons or links where it might become hard to read.

Another tip is to check the font’s available styles and weights. Churly offers several options, including regular, bold, and italic, which gives you flexibility in your design choices. It’s also important to verify that the font supports all the characters you need, especially if you’re building a multilingual site or working with special symbols.

Finally, before using any font on a live site, I always confirm the licensing terms. Since Churly is a commercial font, it’s essential to ensure that you have the right to use it for your specific project—whether it’s a client site, a product landing page, or a digital brand kit.

In the end, Churly proved to be a versatile and stylish choice for the jewelry store. It brought a sense of elegance and approachability that aligned perfectly with the brand’s identity. Whether you're designing a portfolio, a course sales page, or a campaign landing page, Churly could be the perfect font to elevate your design and create a more polished online brand experience.
